About me

Dean of Sophia Theological Seminary, Bible Scholar, Teacher, Preacher

I am the founding dean of Sophia Theological Seminary located in Dinwiddie, VA.  Before Sophia, I taught Hebrew at the Baptist Theological Seminary at Richmond (VA) for nearly a quarter century. I came to BTSR from a post as Associate Professor of Religion and Director of the Honors Program at Carson-Newman College (now Carson-Newman University) in Jefferson City, TN.

Born in Ft. Payne, AL and educated in the public schools of Orange County, FL and DeKalb County, AL, I received a BAH in English and Religion from Samford University (Birmingham, AL), an MDiv from The Southern Baptist Seminary, a ThM from Rueschlikon Baptist Theological Seminary (Zurich, Switzerland), and the DrTheol from the University of Zurich. I did post-doctoral work at Yale University.

I have served churches in Alabama, Kentucky, Indiana, Germany, Switzerland, and Tennessee. My publications include seven books, seventeen translations (German to English), and more than 150 articles, book reviews, and lectures. Currently, I serve on the editorial board of the Review & Expositor, and am the General Editor of the Reading the Old Testament commentary series (Smyth & Helwys), and an Area Editor of the Smyth & Helwys Bible Commentary.

My other interests are my family, music – especially classical and jazz piano, swing trombone, and blue-grass banjo – and vegetable gardening.
