About me

Hebrew Bible Scholar, Teacher, Preacher

I am the Russell T. Cherry Professor of Old Testament at the Baptist Theological Seminary at Richmond (VA), where I have been teaching since the fall of 1997. I came to BTSR from a post as Associate Professor of Religion and Director of the Honors Program at Carson-Newman College (Jefferson City, TN).

I was born in Ft. Payne, AL and educated in the public schools of Orange County, FL and DeKalb County, AL. I received a BAH in English and Religion from Samford University (Birmingham, AL), an MDiv from The Southern Baptist Seminary, an ThM from Rueschlikon Baptist Theological Seminary (Zurich, Switzerland), and the DrTheol from the University of Zurich. I did post-doctoral work at Yale University.

I have served churches in Alabama, Kentucky, Indiania, Germany, Switzerland, and Tennessee. My publications include six books, ten translated volumes (German to English), and more than 150 articles, book reviews, and lectures. Currently, I am the Managing Editor of the Review & Expositor, the General Editor of the Reading the Old Testament commentary series (Smyth & Helwys), and Area Editor of the Smyth & Helwys Bible Commentary.

My other interests are my family, music – especially classical and jazz piano, swing trombone, and blue-grass banjo – and vegetable gardening.
